5 of My Favorite Things to Do in Islamorada
People are always asking me questions about planning trips to Disney World and going on cruise vacations. But there is one other inquiry I commonly get: Where should we go in the Keys?
Many people want to extend their Florida trip and visit the Keys. And for good reason. The Keys are one of the most unique and special places on the planet.
My favorite spot is Islamorada. It’s about an hour and a half from Miami. It’s less busy than Key West and much more charming than Key Largo. So here are a few of my must-do’s …
1. Have Breakfast at the Green Turtle Inn: This historic restaurant has been around since the 1940s when it was a turtle cannery. It has also been featured on Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. It has the best breakfast on the island. Try the breakfast burrito, and sit at the bar for some local flavor!
2. See the Tarpon: There are two places to view these fantastic fish. One is the Islamorada Fish Company. They have a viewing area outside of the restaurant where you can see the tarpon for free. But if you want to feed them, head over to Robbie’s Marina. Pay a few bucks for a bucket a fish and go out on the dock. Just watch out for the aggressive pelicans!
3. Visit a Terrific Brewery: Islamorada has two great breweries: The Florida Keys Brewing Company and Islamorada Brewery and Distillery. Both are fun places to enjoy a beer flight or cocktail in their adorable gardens. And bonus! They both have food trucks on the premises with tasty dining options.
4. Enjoy Quality Wine and Charcuterie: When you’re tired of fried conch fritters and rum punches, head over to the Islamorada Wine Company. This cozy wine bar has an impressive wine selection, fabulous charcuterie and a friendly staff. This is one of my musts every time I visit.
5. Enjoy the Sunset: People come from all over the world to see a Florida Keys’ sunset. The best viewing area is at Morada Bay. You can get a drink there or Pierre’s next door. Pierre’s is a breathtaking plantation-style house with a beautiful bar (and an overpriced restaurant IMHO). It was featured in the television show Bloodline. Then step out to the beach, grab a table and get your camera ready.
